What Our Clients Say

Building relationships is key to what we do ... here are some testimonials kindly provided by our clients.

QuickBooks LogoWe were recommended QuickBooks by our accountant “Waltons Clark Whitehill” following VAT registration.

It was a quick and easy set-up, helped by Heather and Daniel who gave us a clear tutorial.  The system is very user-friendly and is ideal for the novice user.  It saves time by remembering regular income and outgoings, so you are not repeating recurring transactions.  Also, being newly VAT registered, using QuickBooks has helped make the process of VAT returns very easy.

We have no hesitation in recommending QuickBooks and Heather and the team.

xero Xero has allowed us to simplify our accounts as well as linking directly with WCW for our accounting needs and when filing returns. Direct bank feeds make reconciling bank accounts simple and submitting quarterly VAT returns to HMRC can be done at push of a button. Being cloud based meant there was room to grow as the business grew and when we launched our website in 2015 Xero was linked to our site for invoicing and PayPal payments. Best of all it can be used on tablets and phone apps so we aren’t restricted to one computer in the office, giving us more time out there with our customers.”

"Paul Gough Physio Rooms Limited is a specialist Occupational Health Physiotherapy Provider and now one of the leading practices across the North East. We began life in Hartlepool in 2007 and have grown steaily to now run practices in the Darlington, Durham and Guisborough regions.

We transferred our accounting needs to Waltons Clark Whitehill (WCW) in 2008 as the company grew, following a number of strong recommendations that they would improve the way our accounting was done.

The steady growth of the company, thanks to contracts with companis such as ASDA, Housing Hartlepool, BUPA and Coast and Country, meant that we were able to purchase our first premises in 2011 in Hartlepool with our second purchase planned for the Durham area this summer.  We feel this has given the business yet further stability and credibility.

Derek Boyd of WCW was instrumental in us forging a sound relationship with the bank to allow these purchases to go ahead, despite the strict lending criteria in the market place at the minute.

WCW are responsible for our annual accounting and our regular payroll needs.  I have made Derek aware of how helpful and efficient I find Bev, Sue and other members of the extended team on a number of occasions.

The payroll team are also responsible for the direct transfer of wages to my colleagues via the online payment system which allows us all to concentrate on our specific roles without worrying about month end procedures and payments being made to staff.

Although we've had an incredibly successful few years, it's fantastic to know that we have the knowledge and experience of someone like Derek to turn to as the company grows yet further."

"c2a learning is an education services company established in January 2005, operating in the public and private sectors. We work with schools, local authorities, academies, IT providers, design and construction companies, offering a full range of services to meet client needs.

c2a learning is client and solution focused.  We employ creative and innovative approaches to meet challenges and we understand that effecting change depends on all aspects of the system evolving: the environments, the technology, the learning frameworks and most importantly the people.

We have been working with Derek Boyd of Waltons Clark Whitehill since we started in business. As c2a learning has grown, the support and advice from Derek and his team, especially David Wilson regarding VAT, has been really useful and saved us significant amounts of money.

In addition to annual accounts, Waltons Clark Whitehill also prepare management accounts for our business.  The timely nature of the production of these, particularly in these challenging times for a company like ours, has helped us to make business decisions based on current information. It has also allowed us to have informed discussions, both with Waltons Clark Whitehill and internally, to enable us to think and plan strategically.

As well as our accounts, Waltons Clark Whitehill support c2a learning with payroll, tax advice for the company as well as family members, general financial matters for the company, and a nice cup of coffee and a friendly face when we visit the office."

"My relationships with WCW started many moons ago, and Graeme Surtees has now been advising me and 'looking after' my tax affairs for over 20 years!  He definitely knows much more about my financial status than my wife (although I'm still waiting for that invite to a golf day!).

Operating as a limited company providing consultancy services in Project Controls to a wide selection of engineering companies covering Oil and Gas, Power and Industrial Maintenance fields, I have travelled the length and breadth of the country, as well as some far corners of the world providing these services.  All the while, back here, Graeme and the WCW team have provided me with the security that at least my tax affairs are being handled professionally.

Throughout the years, WCW have maintained my annual accounts and PAYE for three separate companies.  In that long time one of the key phrases and I remind Graeme of each year when my considerable accounts records arrive with a large 'thud' on his desk is 'keep that pencil sharp'.

As sure as night follows day, taxes have to be paid and as the years go by it always sees tom me that the end of the tax year comes around much quicker.  I'm sure that none of us really look forward to getting those tax bills, but at least I am happy in the knowledge that the WCW team have looked at the most efficient ways of making it less painful.

In our regular day to day working lives we all have enough pressure on us to maintain regular contracts, generate new contracts, keep the clients happy, and manage to meet all our deadlines, outputs and commitments.  On top of that, trying to deal with payroll and regular tax issues, producing all the paperwork required to keep our tax affairs in order, is a considerable task.  All these areas represent a minefield of issues and ones I'm sure we all strive to stay clear of.  I am thankful that I have Graeme, Shirley and the rest of the WCW team to keep me on the 'straight and narrow'!

By now, my accounts records will have landed at Graeme’s office ready for him and the team to perform their magic.  I am sure that this year the WCW team are an altogether happier lot in their new surroundings of ‘Maritime House’.  Let’s hope we can continue a long and successful relationship for many years to come, until I retire to the fairways and greens.  But in the meantime, don’t forget, “KEEP THAT PENCIL SHARP….”

"Harbour Support Services is a specialist domestic abuse charity based in Hartlepool, but active across the North East, and have been supported by Waltons Clark Whitehill (WCW) with accountancy and auditing services since 1986. Harbour works with individuals and families to enable them to make positive changes in their lives.  Services are aimed at adults who have been the victim of domestic abuse, children who have been affected and programmes for those who perpetrate abuse, to enable them to make changes to their behaviour.

The organisation is passionate about its work, ably led by the commitment and vision of Chief Executive Lesley Gibson, who has been with the organisation for nearly 30 years.

Lesley commented: "Harbour operates over six different sites currently, with each project often in receipt of funding from multiple sources, so it is essential that Harbour’s advisers understand the complexities of charity funding, which WCW do.

From small beginnings in 1974, we have grown to an organisation employing around 80 staff with income of nearly £2m, and with all the many contracts we deliver on, and grants we receive, it is essential we have effective and pragmatic financial advice on tap.

We have a small in-house finance team, but this is complemented and supported by the skills of WCW Managing Partner, Heather O’Driscoll and her team. As good governance is so essential for a registered charity, it is vital that our Trustees can rely on the rigour and independence of the annual audit, to ensure that the organisation is well run and financially sound."

Lesley Gibson, Chief Executive Harbour Support

"From day one, Paul Harrison (and his team) have helped in every possible way.  In the last 24 months they've advised at every step of the way as my business grew, recently advising on the purchase of our new 25,000 sq ft warehouse to enable our further expansion.  I have NEVER given a testimonial of this nature in my life (53 years and counting!) so to do so is a mark of the tremendous respect I have for Paul and the work he has done for my business."

Geoff Usherwood, Managing Director High Ridge Products Limited

"Having known Heather for the last two years since appointing WCW as accountants for our newly formed school Academy, Tudhoe Learning Trust, I can honestly say that I would recommend Heather and WCW in a heartbeat. Heather has supported us through the whole process from inception, setting up systems, training staff, supporting Directors and has been a true critical friend to me as CEO.

It goes without saying that all the legal aspects of the work of external accountants are carried out efficiently and professionally, but it is the fact that Heather and her team provide such a personal service that I really appreciate the most.  Now our Trust is established and we have our own Finance & Business Director (Heather supported Directors throughout the appointment process), WCW have adapted how we work together and the partnership between us continues to develop.

Not only does Heather have credibility as an accountant, she is also a delight to work with due to her straight talking approach and sense of humour.  Our Trust would not have come as far in the last two years without Heather and WCW and consequently I would recommend them without hesitation."

Jim Smith, Tudhoe Learning Trust

"We have worked with Heather and WCW from our conversion to an academy in November 2013.  They have supported and helped throughout our first year, providing advice to the Board, Head Teacher and Finance Team in respect of risk registers, financial procedures and many other ad hoc queries.  More recently they have provided advice as we have had another academy joining the Trust.

Being able to pick up the phone to have a query answered without having to worry about additional costs is great - the all inclusive fee price works really well and means we have developed a strong, supportive partnership."

Alison Lazenby, Executive Head Teacher Cleves Cross Learning Trust

With over twenty-five years of experience within the industry, AKV Group, of Shildon, remains one of the market leaders for the manufacture and supply of bespoke architectural fabrications and rainwater goods.

"Waltons Clark Whitehill were recommended to AKV Group, and we decided to instruct them as our auditors and tax advisers in the early part of this year. Looking back, it is without question a decision that has literally paid dividends. Paul Harrison and his team have provided crucial information on general business issues, complex VAT transactions and future tax planning.

The WCW team have always been happy to deal with any queries we've had, and there is no hesitation to pick up the phone. Without a doubt, we would be happy to recommend Waltons Clark Whitehill to anyone looking to change accountants, and we look forward to strengthening our ongoing relationship with them."

George Hardey is my main "go to" person at Waltons Clark Whitehill. I find George's tax advice second to none, he is extremely knowledgeable and is able to explain things in a precise and succinct manner, often resulting in a tax saving. I would like to congratulate George on his appointment as a director and look forward to continuing with our working relationship in the future.

Gordon Rennie, The WHSN Group

“The service from Graeme Surtees and the team at Waltons Clark Whitehill has been outstanding and quite insightful for a relatively new business, so much so that we decided to outsource our payroll to WCW. Shirley Lamb and her payroll team have smoothly implemented workplace pension auto-enrolment and we are also in the process of switching to cloud accounting.  We’ll be using the Xero package recommended by WCW and look forward to working together with the WCW team to ensure this software is used to its full potential”

Leah Moore, Funky Laser Limited

When we went through our management buyout we were supported by one of the "big four" accounting firms. It didn't take too long to realise that they were a little out of our league. We wanted someone who was more local and who would get to know us as we developed. We were bought out last year by a multi-national UK company who wanted to expand into our markets.Paul and his tax partner, provided all the accounting due diligence, advice and transaction support required ... the purchasers were impressed enough to continue to use WCW's outsourcing team going forward. WCW have provided the best support any company could wish for. I could not have asked for anything more.

Andy Beardsmore, former Managing Director

My wife and I have been clients of WCW for over twenty-seven years. We find their staff to be most friendly and helpful and capable of advising immediately on any tax or other financial difficulty. We find them sympathetic to our needs and overall, they give an excellent service at an affordable price.
